“Anyone find it weird that their last name is so similar?” Turney asked as he stared at the files laid out between them.

They were sitting in a circle on the disputed land reviewing the details before they headed off. Each side had provided them with a packet of papers. Both packets contained a whole list of names, ages, addresses, and cell phone numbers, as well as some random information that he guessed they hoped would show that they owned the land. Oddly, neither had provided an actual picture of anyone listed. Oh, except for the gnomes. And then again, it was just the horrifying pictures of the murder.

“I mean…it’s questionable, but I suppose it could happen?” Min-ji shrugged, frowning.

“No, it’s pretty weird, but let’s move on,” Octavius said with a snort. “So, on the gnome side. First, family-wise, we have the great grandparents, Zarber and Lakewel, and the grandparents, Temtic and Theppie. Then there are Tark and Norivy, who are the parents of the most recent generation of trolls. Their sons, in order from eldest to youngest; Mazlo, Oz, and Borne. To note, the grandparents are Tark’s parents, and the greats are from his father’s side.” The vampire frowned. “It’s going to be super confusing if I try to spell out all the relations that are not here, and who they go to, so just assume if they aren’t mentioned, they either are not living or, more likely, just don’t live here anymore. Or in some cases…there are some random distantly-related cousins whose info isn’t really needed for the case. There are apparently older generations that don’t live here anymore that aren’t in heavy contact with either side, but when they were here, both claimed ownership of this piece of land. So they wouldn’t be helpful, even if they were still here. The oldest known relative’s name is a female gnome named Zevidan, but there are no stories or historic records for her. The latest generation are all very young, by the way. As in, most are Turney’s age or younger.”

“The murder victim was my age, wasn’t he?” Turney asked. When Octavius nodded, he continued. “But Dart Greatin, the murder victim, was not from the main family. There is a list of three close friends, and Mazlo is on it. According to the report, if it is correct, he was found beaten and impaled in his human form. There are some…” He flipped the page in the packet to the gruesome photographs of the body. “…lovely images of that.”

The male had only been twenty-five—Turney’s age. The body in the pictures was bloody and bruised. Part of a rack of some kind was plunging out of his body. It looked to have pierced his heart…and stomach. To be specific, he was eviscerated—things he didn’t want to look closely at, or identify, hung out of the wound and lay piled on the ground. But he was pretty sure those were intestines.

Scarlett hummed. “Wound list: Numerous contusions, a cracked skull, fractured eye socket. He was disemboweled, and there are a few insignificant broken bones.
